Sudden cardiac arrest among kids is rare, but it can be deadly. That’s why there’s legislation in Lansing that would require Michigan school have AEDs on hand for sporting events.

The sponsor is state Representative John Fitzgerald of Wyoming, who told us more.

Some schools in Michigan already have AEDs equipped in their schools, but the state doesn’t require schools or school athletic facilities to have these AEDs on hand,” Fitzgerald said.

The bill is currently in committee.

High school athletes going into cardiac arrest during a game isn’t unheard of. On December 31, a basketball player in Detroit went into cardiac arrest during a game and later died at a hospital.
