Gabe Vilardi had a goal and two assists, Laurent Brossoit made 26 saves and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 on Wednesday night to take sole possession of the Central Division lead. Axel Jonnson-Fjallby and Nikolaj Ehlers each had a goal and an assist and Mark Scheifele and Neal Pionk also scored to help Winnipeg improve to 9-9-3. Patrick Kane and Olli Maatta scored for Detroit, and James Reimer stopped 36 shots. The Red Wings fell to 15-13-4. Scheifele put it away with 4:48 left with Winnipeg’s fifth goal, converting a setup from Vilardi.
NHL – Local broadcasts for 11 NHL teams will remain on Bally Sports after agreement
The NHL and Diamond Sports Group, the largest owner of regional sports networks, have reached an agreement that will keep local broadcasts for 11 teams on Bally Sports through the end of this season. The agreement, which was contained in a court filing made Wednesday, is subject to court approval. Diamond Sports has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the Southern District of Texas since it filed for protection in March. The company said in a financial filing last year that it had debt of $8.67 billion. While there will be a reduction in rights payments for some teams, the local rights for those 11 franchises will revert back to the NHL at the end of this season. The agreement provides stability for fans, networks and teams after Major League Baseball had to take over the broadcasts of San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks games last season after agreements could not be reached. The Red Wings are one of the teams that are on Bally. Diamond also reached the same type of agreement with the NBA for the 15 teams under contract to the RSNs last month. Diamond is also in discussions with Major League Baseball on reworked agreements for the 2024 season with as many as 11 teams, with the next court hearing scheduled for Jan. 10. Despite the continued absence of All-Star guard Zach LaVine due to right foot inflammation, the Bulls opened a six-game homestand with their third win in four games. James had 25 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for Los Angeles, falling just shy of a second consecutive triple-double.

Buddy Hield scored 25 points, Tyrese Haliburton had 19 points and 13 assists and the Indiana Pacers snapped a four-game losing streak, routing the Charlotte Hornets 144-113 on Wednesday night behind 61% shooting. The Pacers made 28 of 30 free throws and led by 33. Aaron Nesmith added 19 points, Myles Turner had 18, Bennedict Mathurin 14 and Jalen Smith and Isaiah Jackson 10 apiece. Terry Rozier had 25 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Charlotte, and rookie Brandon Miller added 21 points and six rebounds. The Hornets shot 47% from the field, making only eight 3-pointers to the Pacers’ 18.

NFL – CB Johnson says he’d rather sign new deal with Bears than explore free agency
Star cornerback Jaylon Johnson says he would sign a new contract with the Chicago Bears instead of testing the free agent market if they made the right offer. Johnson says he wants “to get something done” and would “love to stay” with the Bears. Johnson is in the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. He has been in a standoff all season with the Bears. He requested a trade before the Oct. 31 deadline. Johnson has four interceptions this season. All have come in his past eight games after he recorded one in his first 43 career appearances.

Ohio State hasn’t played in the Big Ten championship game in three years, but it remains the conference’s top program in recruiting. The Buckeyes signed five of the six five-star recruits in the 247Sports Composite rankings who are headed to Big Ten schools. Penn State and Michigan are ranked second and third, respectively, among teams in the Big Ten in 2023. Oregon, one of four Pac-12 schools that will enter the league in 2024, assembled the sixth-ranked class in the nation. That would put the Ducks No. 2 in the Big Ten. Nebraska landed five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola.
MLB – Jack Flaherty and Detroit Tigers finalize $14 million, 1-year contract
Right-hander Jack Flaherty and the Detroit Tigers have finalized a $14 million, one-year contract, a deal that allows the 28-year-old right-hander to earn an additional $1 million in performances bonuses. Flaherty would earn $250,000 each for 26 and 28 starts and $500,000 for 30. He went 8-9 with a 4.99 ERA in 27 starts and two relief appearances, including 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA in seven starts and two relief outings with the Orioles. Baltimore acquired him on Aug. 1 for infielder César Prieto, left-hander Drew Rom and right-hander Zack Showalter.
NCAAFB – Michigan receives notice of allegations from NCAA
NCAA sent Michigan a notice of allegations related to impermissible on- and off-campus recruiting during the COVID-19 dead period and coaching activities, potential violations that led to the school’s self-imposed three-game suspension of Jim Harbaugh to start the season. School spokesman Kurt Svoboda confirmed Wednesday that the notice was received this week. The Big Ten suspended Harbaugh for the final three games of the regular season for an unrelated matter, stemming from a sign-stealing scheme, that is still under investigation. Harbaugh will lead the Wolverines against Alabama in the semifinals of the College Football Playoffs on Jan. 1.

Alabama backup quarterback Tyler Buchner is returning to Notre Dame as a lacrosse player. Buchner announced on social media that he plans to return to South Bend, Indiana, after one season at Alabama to play lacrosse and finish his degree. He plans to stay with the Crimson Tide through the College Football Playoff. Alabama faces Michigan on Jan. 1 in the Rose Bowl. Buchner followed first-year offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to Tuscaloosa after beginning the 2022 season as Notre Dame’s starter. He started one game.
