With two legislative openings in the Michigan House, it could be mid-2024 before those seats could be filled.
Between new rules added to the Michigan Constitution, as well as technical and procedural hurdles, clerks are already planning three large elections next year. Bridge Michigan reporter Jonathan Oosting tells us they are the February presidential primary, the August primary, and the November general election.
“So the question is, is the governor going to add another election to the workload of these local clerks or use at least one but maybe two of those existing dates to hold these special elections as well? That’s what clerks would prefer.”
Oosting says it could be May of next year before the seats are filled.
With a 54 to 54 tie in the state House, that will have an impact on partisan bills, as the House would have to focus on bipartisan work.
