The leader of the United Auto Workers is urging a U.S. Senate committee to step up and help the working class.

UAW President Shawn Fain told senators this week there are three things that need to be dealt with going forward.

“Income inequality, the transition to a green economy as we have to have the economy and environment we can live in, and retirement insecurity,” Fain said. “They’re all linked, and they are the fight for our future. What kind of economy do we want to live in, what kind of planet do we want to live on, and what kinds of lives do we want to lead?”

Fain reiterated that many workers have reached out to talk about joining the union as a result of the new tentative contracts with Ford, GM, and Stellantis. He said many foreign automakers are now raising pay for their workers.

Fain called it the “UAW bump” and said UAW stands for “You Are Welcome.”
