 1768 The first ‘Methodist’ church in America was dedicated, the Wesley Chapel in New York City.

1938 Orson Welles panicked the nation with his radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells about an Martian alien invasion. Broadcast in the style of an ongoing news event, many people missed the opening disclaimer and believed it was a live broadcast of an actual alien invasion.

1974 Muhammed Ali won by a knockout against the overwhelming favorite George Foreman in Zaire for the heavyweight boxing championship. Dubbed “The Rumble in the Jungle”, The fight was watched by a record estimated television audience of 1 billion viewers worldwide, becoming the world’s most-watched live television broadcast at the time and the fight grossed an estimated $100 million in revenue.

 

Music History:

1968 Marvin Gaye released ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine’ which became his first US No.1 single. It was Marvin’s 15th solo hit. The single was first recorded by Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight & the Pips and The California Raisins, an animated musical group that made their first appearance for a California Raisin Board commercial.
