Phillies 10, Diamondbacks 0 – Schwarber homers twice, Turner goes deep, Phillies power past Arizona 10-0
Kyle Schwarber hit two of Philadelphia’s three solo homers off Merrill Kelly, and the sweet-swinging Phillies pounded the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-0 for a 2-0 lead in the NL Championship Series. Trea Turner also connected and J.T. Realmuto had two hits and three RBIs as Philadelphia improved to 7-1 in the playoffs, moving closer to a second straight World Series appearance. Aaron Nola tossed three-hit ball and struck out seven in six innings. Game 3 is Thursday at Chase Field.

Scottie Barnes and Pascal Siakam scored 22 points apiece and visiting Toronto beat Chicago to improve to 3-0 in the preseason.  Zach LaVine scored 25 points and Nikola Vucevic had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls, whose starters played the majority of the game. Chicago used only three bench players.

WNBA – Israel-Hamas war means one less overseas option for WNBA players
WNBA players have one less option to play overseas with the conflict in Israel, adding to diminishing opportunities amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Last offseason nearly half the league played in overseas leagues in Israel, Australia, Turkey, Italy and about a half-dozen other countries to supplement their WNBA incomes. That continues to change. But China has returned as a top landing spot with stars Alyssa Thomas and Jonquel Jones both planning on going to the Asian nation. The country had been closed to international players because of its COVID-19 policy for the past few years.

NCAAFB – Biggest surprise, disappointment, Heisman favorite and top coach so far
Halfway through the 2023 season, the national championship race feels more wide open than it has been in years. Seems like a great time for a 12-team College Football Playoff but that will have to until 2024. For now, the playoff is still a four-team bracket. At midseason, No. 16 Duke is the most pleasant surprise and Clemson isthe biggest disappointment, according to AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo. He also likes LSU’s Jayden Daniels for the Heisman Trophy and Utah’s Kyle Whittingham as the top coach so far.

Michigan State linebacker Jordan Hall talks about rolling with the punches to maintain focus amid adversity. Bt he never could have expected the haymaker his team absorbed last month. It was the same type of sucker-punch that players at Northwestern, Nebraska and Wisconsin have encountered over the last year. Unexpected firings have left Northwestern and Michigan State playing for interim head coaches. Nebraska and Wisconsin went through similar situations last season. The difference this year is that the Northwestern and Michigan State coaching changes resulted from off-field issues rather than wins and losses.

NFL – The Lions are the real deal because Jared Goff has become a top-tier QB again
The Detroit Lions are legitimate contenders in the NFC because Jared Goff has become a top-tier quarterback again. The 2016 No. 1 overall pick who once led the Rams to an NFC title was given away by Los Angeles in the trade for Matthew Stafford. The Rams had to send Detroit extra picks just to take Goff and his salary. But Goff has gone from a stopgap QB to a Pro Bowl player, helping the Lions to a 5-1 start. He has 1,618 yards passing with 11 TDs, 3 interceptions and a 105.1 passer rating in six games. Last season, he had 29 TD passes and only seven picks.

NFL – NFL considers eliminating hip-drop tackles, will review the ‘tush push’
The NFL is looking to eliminate the hip-drop tackle and will again discuss the “tush push” in the offseason. League executive Jeff Miller said Tuesday the hip-drop tackle increases risk of injury by 25 times the rate of a standard tackle. Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith briefly left a game against the Giants in Week 4 after getting hurt by a hip-drop tackle. The league made the horse-collar tackle illegal several years ago because a defender’s body weight ends up on the legs of the ball carrier, enhancing risk of injury. Rich McKay, the chairman of the NFL’s competition committee, called the hip-drop tackle a “cousin” of the horse collar.

NFL – Time for fans of stumbling NFL teams to start dreaming about Caleb Williams
There’s a huge silver lining for the NFL teams who have stumbled to start the 2023 season. It’s a race to the bottom of the league and the right to draft Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams with the top pick of the 2024 NFL draft. Williams is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner who is seen as a generational talent. In an interview last year while he was on a year’s coaching sabbatical Sean Payton said Williams was good enough for teams to tank their seasons to try to land the quarterback who has 108 touchdowns in just 32 games.

NFL – Anthony Richardson ‘probably going to be gone for the year,’ Colts owner says
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay says rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson may need season-ending surgery on his injured right shoulder. Irsay told ESPN that surgery was the most likely treatment for Richardson’s sprained AC joint but a final decision has not been made. His comments reiterate what coach Shane Steichen said earlier Monday. Steichen told reporters Richardson and the team’s medical staff were debating potential treatment options, including surgery. Steichen and Irsay both say Richardson’s long-term health and the Colts’ future will be factors in the decision.

NFL – Colts’ Grover Stewart suspended 6 games for performance-enhancers
The NFL suspended Indianapolis Colts starting defensive tackle Grover Stewart six games without pay Tuesday for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancers. He can return to the team’s active roster Dec. 4. The 314-pound Stewart has been a key part of Indy’s run defense for several years. He’s eighth on the team with 20 tackles, two for loss, while teaming with two-time Pro Bowler DeForest Buckner to give the Colts one of the NFL’s top interior defensive tandems.
         
NCAAWBB – LSU top pick in Women’s preseason poll
LSU is ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll for the first time in school history. The defending champion Tigers were ranked second in 1977 and third twice in 2004 and 2005 in the preseason poll, but never No. 1 until now. LSU received 35 first-place votes. No. 2 UConn received the other top vote. Iowa team is ranked third with UCLA and Utah rounding out the top five. The season begins Nov. 6.

NCAA – NCAA president shifts focus to employment status of athletes
During a Senate hearing, NCAA President Charlie Baker shifted the focus of college sports’ need for federal legislation away from regulating how athletes can be compensated for their fame to the looming possibility of the players being deemed employees of their schools. Baker, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick were among the witnesses appearing in front of the House Judiciary Committee. This was the 10th hearing on college sports to be held on Capitol Hill since 2020. Baker said in his opening statement that college sports are “overdue for change.”
