The Powerball jackpot now stands at an estimated $1.4 billion for Saturday’s drawing.
More than 3.2 million non-jackpot-winning tickets were sold nationwide in the last drawing, but the ticket holders weren’t the only winners.
Michigan Lottery spokesperson Jake Harris says retailers earn a commission for selling or cashing a winning ticket,. He says the really big winner is the Michigan School Aid Fund.
“When we have these jackpot runs, sales go up, and that’s good news for Michigan schools,” Harris said. “We’ll be announcing here in the next several weeks after our audits are all complete that we finished the 2023 fiscal year with our fifth consecutive $billion or more contribution to the Michigan School Aid Fund.”
Harris notes this is the first time we’ve had back-to-back billion dollar Powerball runs.
This weekend’s Powerball drawing is the third largest in the history of the game.
