In Michigan, drivers can no longer hold or use a cell phone while operating a vehicle, but distracted driving still happens.

To better understand problem areas and frequency of the distracted driving, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety turned to technology to track driver habits. The group’s Jessica Cicchino told us more.

“It’s important to know how big the problem is and how it’s happening,” Cicchino said. “So, having this more accurate data of where people are driving distracted and how much it’s really happening can help us deploy resources in a more efficient way to really get at that problem.”

Cicchino says the IIHS used camera technology, AI, and other data to monitor major roadways for driver cellphone use. With that information, they’re creating a profile of dangerous areas. When narrowed down, it could be used by law enforcement to monitor and enforce distracted driving laws.

Ultimately, the goal is to save additional lives.
