Lions 20, Falcons 6 – Jared Goff throws and runs for TDs, Lions beat Falcons 20-6
Jared Goff threw a tiebreaking 45-yard touchdown pass to Sam LaPorta early in the second quarter, sending the Detroit Lions to a 20-6 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The former Iowa star, drafted No. 34 overall, was the first NFL tight end to catch five passes in each of his first two games. The Lions earned a much-needed win after following a hype-fueling victory at Kansas City with a deflating loss at home to Seattle. The Falcons failed to protect Desmond Ridder, who was sacked seven times by a team that had only one sack in two games. Detroit scored first, taking advantage of favorable field position by forcing a punt with sacks on two straight snaps. Goff was 22 of 33 for 243 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also had a 3-yard designed run for a score that fooled the Falcons on third down, giving Detroit a 20-3 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Chiefs 41, Bears 10 – Patrick Mahomes throws 3 TD passes, Taylor Swift celebrates as Chiefs rout Bears 41-10
Patrick Mahomes threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Jerick McKinnon, and the Kansas City Chiefs routed the Chicago Bears 41-10. Travis Kelce also had a TD catch for the Chiefs, much to the delight of 12-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift, who watched the game from a suite after getting an invitation from the All-Pro tight end. The Bears lost their 13th consecutive game dating to last season. Justin Fields was just 11 of 22 for 99 yards with a TD and an interception.

Colts 22, Ravens 19 – OT – Matt Gay kicks 4 FGs over 50 yards, including OT winner, as Colts beat Ravens 22-19
Matt Gay capped a terrific day of kicking with a 53-yard field goal in overtime, giving the Indianapolis Colts a 22-19 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Gay made four kicks from beyond 50 yards, including a 53-yarder that tied it in the final minute of regulation. His chance in overtime didn’t come until after both teams had been stopped on fourth down near midfield. Gardner Minshew, playing in place of injured rookie Anthony Richardson, threw for 227 yards and a touchdown for the Colts. Lamar Jackson ran for 101 yards and two TDs for the Ravens.

NFL – Bears wrap up dismal week with dismal performance in loss to KC
The Bears were already having a bad week before they got to Kansas City. Then it became a whole lot worse. The Bears were blown out 41-10 in a game that was never very close. That came after defensive coordinator Alan Williams abruptly resigned earlier in the week and quarterback Justin Fields was forced to walk back comments that put the blame for his “robotic” performances the previous two weeks on his coaching staff. Fields was just 11 of 22 for 99 yards with a touchdown and an interception against the Chiefs. The Bears had 203 yards of total offense.

NFL – Dolphins rout Broncos 70-20, scoring the most points by an NFL team since 1966
The Miami Dolphins scored the most points in a game by an NFL team since 1966, overwhelming the Denver Broncos 70-20 behind rookie speedster De’Von Achane’s 203 yards rushing and Tua Tagovailoa’s no-look shovel-pass TD. The Dolphins set a franchise record for scoring and finished two points shy of the NFL’s regular-season record — set in 1966 when Washinton scored 72 points against the Giants. They are the fourth team in NFL history to score at least 70 points in a regular-season or playoff game.

NFL – Usher to headline the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show in Las Vegas
Usher has a new confession: The Grammy winner will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show in Las Vegas. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Sunday that Usher would lead the halftime festivities from Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11. The music megastar, who has won eight Grammys, said he’s looking forward to performing on the NFL’s biggest stage. The 44-year-old is 44, is currently headlining his “Usher: My Way” residency in Las Vegas, which has drawn sold-out shows and rave reviews.

Eduardo Rodriguez threw seven scoreless innings to end Detroit’s two-game losing streak, and the Tigers beat the last-placed Athletics 2-0 in Oakland’s last home game. Spencer Torkelson had two hits Sunday and drove in the only runs in the game with a two-run single in the third, helping Detroit finish 6-4 on its final road trip of the season. The A’s lost for the ninth time in 11 games and tied the Oakland-era record for most losses in a season, initially set in 1979. The A’s also tied the franchise mark of 55 home losses.

Cubs 4, Rockies 3 – Wisdom hits go-ahead homer, playoff-hopeful Cubs beat Rockies 4-3
Patrick Wisdom put Chicago ahead with a two-run homer in the sixth inning, Seiya Suzuki had two hits and scored twice, and the Cubs helped their playoff chances by beating the Colorado Rockies 4-3. Yan Gomes also drove in two runs for the Cubs, who remained a game in front of Miami for the final NL wild card. Jordan Wicks allowed three runs over six innings for Chicago in its final home game of the regular season. The Cubs have won three straight after dropping seven of eight. Brendan Rodgers and Nolan Jones homered for the Rockies in their franchise-record 99th loss.

White Sox 3, Red Sox 2 – Clevinger pitches 6 innings; White Sox beat Boston for 1st series since early August
Mike Clevinger pitched six solid innings, Elvis Andrus had a two-run double and the Chicago White Sox beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 in a rain-shortened game on Sunday, ending a string of 12 straight series losses. Trying to avoid their second 100-loss season in five years and the fifth in club history, the White Sox took two of three from the Red Sox and captured their first series since August 7-9 when they went 2-1 against the Yankees. The umpires called for the tarp after the sixth inning and the game was called after an hour, 43–minute delay.

NCAAFB – Frustrated Irish lament miscues that led to loss to OSU
The anguish was evident all over the face of Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman. All the Fighting Irish needed was one more stop to beat Ohio State for the first time since 1936. Instead, they only had 10 players on the field. But it wasn’t the only miscue they made. There was a dropped interception on the final drive. There was the batted pass that stopped the clock on Notre Dame’s final drive. And yet all they could do was lament another loss to the Buckeyes.

NCAAFB – Colorado falls out of rankings; Ohio State moves up
Colorado fell out of The Associated Press college football poll after a resounding loss in one of the weekend’s showcase games and the teams toward the top of the rankings were shuffled and tightened. Six teams received first-place votes. Georgia is still where it started at No. 1 but down to 55 first-place votes. Michigan remained No. 2 and got a first-place vote. Texas stayed at No. 3 with two first-place votes. Ohio State moved up two spots to No. 4 and got a first-place vote after beating Notre Dame. Colorado went from 19th to out after losing 42-7 to Oregon.

FIFA – Megan Rapinoe gets triumphant send-off as United States beats South Africa 2-0
Megan Rapinoe got a triumphant send-off, and the United States beat South Africa 2-0. Trinity Rodman and Emily Sonnett scored, and the U.S. sent its captain toward retirement with one final victory as a member of the national team. The 38-year-old Rapinoe was presented a framed jersey representing her 203 games with the United States prior to the win, and she raised her arms as the crowd roared. Rodman gave the U.S. more to celebrate when she drilled the ball into the net off a cross from Alex Morgan in the 18th minute. Rapinoe was the first to hug her. Sonnett made it 2-0 with a header in the 49th minute and jumped into Rapinoe’s arms. Rapinoe exited to a standing ovation in the 54th minute.

Golf – LIV – Bryson DeChambeau wins LIV Golf-Chicago, 2nd victory of season
Bryson DeChambeau shot 6-under 28 on the back nine, closed with one last birdie on his penultimate hole and won LIV Golf-Chicago by one shot over Marc Leishman and Anirban Lahiri. DeChambeau finished with an 8-under 63 at Rich Harvest Farms and a 54-hole total of 13-under 200. He started on the fourth hole under LIV’s shotgun format, made his only bogey on the par-4 ninth and then reeled off four birdies in five holes. It’s the second win of the season on the Saudi-funded tour for DeChambeau. His Crushers won the team competition by three shots. That means DeChambeau takes home $5.25 million, including $4 million for the individual trophy.

MCCAA – LMC has two MCCAA players of the week
The Michigan Community College Athletic Association recognized two student athletes at Lake Michigan College as their conference player of the week.  For Volleyball, Red Hawks freshman was named as the MCCAA Western Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the former Niles high school standout also won the award back in week 1.  LMC’s women’s cross country freshman Olivia Ippel was named the MCCAA Cross Country Runner of the Week, by winning the GRCC invitational
with a time of 18:41.7 for a 5k race.  It’s the second race the St. Joe graduated has won this fall.
