A new study reaffirms too much screen time for young children can be damaging to their development. The Journal of the American Medical Association — JAMA Pediatrics — is out with details of a Japanese study involving 60,000 children. It found increased screen time for kids as young as two led to delayed developmental milestones as they grew older. Donna Dotson is a therapist with Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

“The guidelines for children are no screen time for kids under the age of two,” Dotson said. “For children two to five years of limiting screen time to an hour or less each day. Then for kids over the age of five, it is still important to set limits.”

Dotson says another recommendation is to limit screen time at least an hour before bed time. She adds that could also apply to teenagers and adults.
