Suspect involved in chase with police last week dies in hospital

A man who was arrested following a chase with police last week has died in a South Bend hospital.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says a patrol officer from the South Bend Police Department spotted and tried to stop a suspect driving a stolen vehicle last Thursday afternoon when the vehicle took off and headed into Michigan.

The suspect crashed the vehicle in Niles Township and tried to run, but was tased by officers. He was then taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says the suspect, now identified as 45-year-old Darrell Jeffery Goodwin of South Bend, died Tuesday at the hospital. An autopsy has been scheduled.

The incident remains under investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, and the matter will be referred to the prosecutor’s office when it’s complete.
