A debate is planned between candidates for Benton Harbor City Commission. Berrien Forward’s Chokwe Pitchford tells us the group is teaming up with the Voters Not Politicians Education Fund for The Future of Benton Harbor Debate, to be held on September 29 at 6 p.m. at Benton Harbor High School. He says it’s important people pay close attention to local political races.

“School boards, city council, county commission, county clerk, township supervisors,” Pitchford said. “All of these positions matter, and I think that once we start putting a focus on them and making sure that our public discourse revolves around the roads, infrastructure, planning for future pandemics – making sure that those are all at the forefront of conversations is really important.”

Pitchford says the September 29 event will focus on the commissioner-at-large and mayoral races. So far, he says he’s gotten good responses from the candidates. Pitchford is working on a setting up a livestream for the event and will release that information when it’s available. The debate will be moderated by Present Pillars Director James Gunter.
