A new school year brings a lot of change, perhaps none bigger this year than the implementation of universal free breakfast and lunch for public schools in the state. Michigan Education Association President Chandra Madafferi calls it a huge deal.
“Hungry students can’t learn, and even in the most affluent districts, there are parents and families who are food insecure, and I think often, they don’t have the ability or maybe hey don’t know there is free and reduced lunch or they’re concerned about the stigma,” Madafferi said. “So, this takes that away.”
She says it’s such a big deal she invited her counterpart at the National Education Association to come check out what our state’s schools have to offer. NEA President Becky Pringle accepted and the two colleagues ended up serving some of the free breakfasts to students at Dublin Elementary in White Lake.
