Cubs 6, Tigers 4 – Yan Gomes’ single breaks an 8th-inning tie as the wild card-contending Cubs beat the Tigers 6-4
Yan Gomes hit a tiebreaking, two-out single in the eighth inning, and the playoff-contending Chicago Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4. Detroit’s Kerry Carpenter hit a grand slam in the sixth inning off Jameson Taillon that tied the game at 4-all, but his teammates didn’t do much else at the plate. The Cubs have won 24 of their last 34 games and took two of three from the Tigers, improving to 9-1-1 in their last 11 series. They currently hold the second NL wild-card spot and are trying to challenge first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.

White Sox 5, Mariners 4 – F/10 – Anderson scores winning run in the 10th as Sox end Mariners’ 8-game win streak
Designated runner Tim Anderson stole third and scored the winning run on a Seattle throwing error — all on a failed pickoff play — as the Chicago White Sox snapped the Mariners’ season-best eight-game winning streak with a 5-4, 10-inning victory. Anderson was leading off second base when Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh threw to second base in a pickoff attempt following a pitch from Justin Topa. J.P. Crawford took the throw from Raleigh and threw wildly to third in an effort to get Anderson, who scored when the throw sailed over third. Trayce Thompson hit his sixth home run as the White Sox avoided the series sweep. Topa (3-4) took the loss. Sammy Peralta (2-0), the last of six Chicago relievers, earned the win.

MLB – Shohei Ohtani won’t pitch for rest of season because of a torn elbow ligament
Shohei Ohtani won’t pitch for the rest of the season because of a torn ligament in his right elbow, Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Wednesday night. The Angels don’t yet know whether the major league homers leader and 10-game winner will need surgery to repair the UCL ligament nearly five years after the two-way superstar had his first Tommy John surgery in late 2018 following his AL Rookie of the Year season. Ohtani left the mound abruptly Wednesday in the second inning of his start against Cincinnati in the opener of a doubleheader. The injury will have a massive effect on baseball’s free agent market this winter with Ohtani headed to free agency.

MLB – Yankees general manager Brian Cashman calls this season ‘a disaster’
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says this season has “been a disaster.” New York is 61-65, on track for its worst season in more than 30 years. Cashman is promising a search to find out the cause. The Yankees are 9 1/2 games back for the AL’s third and final wild card. Cashman says all options will be examined in looking at injuries, evaluation and underperformance. He says those evaluations will include the status of himself and manager Aaron Boone. New York ended a nine-game skid by beating Washington 9-1 on Wednesday night behind three homers from Aaron Judge.

NFL – Gradishar, McMichael and Powell picked as finalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame
Randy Gradishar, Steve McMichael and Art Powell are finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2023. The three were picked as the three senior candidates from a list of 12 semifinalists. They will get into the Hall if they are supported by at least 80% of voters next January. McMichael anchored the defensive line on Chicago’s famed “46 defense" that won the Super Bowl after the 1985 season.

NFL – Lions hoping Montgomery, rookie Gibbs can keep running game going
The Detroit Lions are counting on running backs David Montgomery, in his fifth season, and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs to give them a strong running game for the second straight season. Neither played in last week’s preseason loss to the Jaguars and they likely won’t see action in the preseason finale on Friday at Carolina. The pair flashed during training camp which wrapped up on Wednesday at the Lions practice facility.

NCAA – ACC progressing westward expansion with Stanford, Cal, SMU potential targets,
The Atlantic Coast Conference is making progress toward an expansion that could grab Stanford and California from the sinking Pac-12, a person with direct knowledge of the ACC’s potential move told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the conference was not making its internal discussions public. Two weeks ago, the ACC gathered its full board of university leaders to consider adding Stanford, Cal and possibly SMU, the Dallas-based American Athletic Conference school. They never took an official vote, but Commissioner Jim Phillips and a small group of conference leaders has continued to work on sticking points.

NCAAFB – MAC preview – Hungry Ohio Bobcats hope to end MAC title drought
Ohio might have snapped the Mid-American Conference’s longest football title drought last year — if quarterback Kurtis Rourke stayed healthy. This year, Rourke and the Bobcats will get another shot to win the crown for the first time since 1968. While it’s unclear when the league’s reigning player of the year will return from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and torn meniscus, the Bobcats and Toledo Rockets appear to be headed toward a title game rematch — this time potentially with Rourke suiting up.  Eastern Michigan is the only team in the current 12-member league that hasn’t won a division title since the inaugural game in 1997. Ohio and Kent State are the only other teams that haven’t hoisted the trophy. The Eagles were picked second in the West, behind Toledo.

UGAGYM– USA Gymnastics wants to build training center by 2028 Olympics
USA Gymnastics is looking to centralize its national training programs before the 2028 Olympics. President Li Li Leung said over a dozen cities have responded to the organization’s request for an “expression of interest” in taking on the project, which would serve as the training and wellness headquarters for the organization’s various disciplines. The national teams for the men’s and women’s artistic programs, as well as the rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline and tumbling programs, currently train in various parts of the country.
