Cubs 7, Tigers 6 – Gomes and Madrigal hit doubles in 9th to help Cubs beat Tigers for 3rd straight win
Yan Gomes and Nick Madrigal hit doubles in the ninth inning and the Chicago Cubs held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 7-6 on Monday night. The Cubs squandered a three-run lead in the eighth and quickly went back ahead. Gomes led off the next inning with a double and Madrigal followed with an RBI double. Madrigal later scored to put Chicago ahead by two, an extra run it needed after Matt Vierling’s single pulled Detroit within a run. Seiya Suzuki hit a homer for the second straight day to help Chicago keep its lead for the final NL wild card.  Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter hit home runs for the second game in a row, clearing the fences on consecutive pitches in the sixth inning to cut Detroit’s deficit to 4-2.  Happ hit a two-out triple and scored on Cody Bellinger’s single in the eighth, giving Chicago a three-run cushion that they needed. Javier Baez hit a two-run double in the eighth against one of his former teams.

Mariners 14, White Sox 2 – Cal Raleigh stars as Mariners pound White Sox 14-2 for 7th straight win
Cal Raleigh homered twice and drove in six runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 14-2 for their seventh straight victory. Playing without Julio Rodríguez, who was rested amid a torrid stretch at the plate, Seattle used a fast start to improve to 32-13 since July 1. Luis Castillo pitched seven innings of one-run ball in his third consecutive win. Raleigh upped his total to 24 homers on the year. It was his fifth multihomer game of the season and No. 7 for his career. The lowly White Sox finished with eight hits in their seventh loss in nine games.

MLB – Guardians claim C Eric Haase off waivers after release by Tigers
Eric Haase’s baseball journey has brought him back to Cleveland. The Guardians claimed the veteran catcher off waivers. That’s just two days after he was released by the Detroit Tigers, the team he grew up in Michigan rooting for and played on for four seasons. The 30-year-old Haase broke in with Cleveland, which drafted him 2011. He made his debut for the club in 2018 and played two seasons for the Guardians before being traded. The Tigers designated him for assignment after Haase struggled at the plate this season. To make room for Haase, the Guardians designated catcher Zack Collins for assignment.

Commanders 29, Ravens 28 – Ravens’ NFL-record preseason winning streak ends at 24 with a loss to Washington
The Baltimore Ravens’ NFL-record preseason winning streak ended at 24 with a loss to the Washington Commanders. Third-string quarterback Jake Fromm led a late drive to set up Joey Slye’s go-ahead 49-yard field goal that gave Washington a 29-28 victory. The Ravens lost a preseason game for the first time since 2015. Baltimore backup QB Josh Johnson and newly crowed Washington starter Sam Howell each threw for two touchdowns. Commanders No. 1 receiver Terry McLaurin left the game with a toe injury late in the second quarter.

NFL – Colts give Jonathan Taylor permission to seek out trade, source says
The Indianapolis Colts are allowing disgruntled running back Jonathan Taylor to seek out a trade partner, a person with knowledge of the situation has told The Associated Press. The person requested anonymity because the details have not been released publicly. NCAAFB – Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh to serve 3-game suspension for recruiting violations
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh will serve a three-game suspension to start this season as part of self-imposed penalties for NCAA recruiting infractions. The school’s move means Harbaugh will not be on the sideline for the second-ranked Wolverines home games against East Carolina, UNLV and Bowling Green. He will be permitted to coach the team during the week, as per NCAA rules. The infractions case is tied to improper contact with recruits.

NCAAFB – Michigan, Ohio St. above the rest in Big Ten’s final year before expansion
The Big Ten’s final season with a 14-team, two-division setup should play out the way it has since the conference last expanded in 2014. That means an East team will win the championship and it probably will be Michigan or Ohio State. The preseason No. 2 Wolverines and No. 3 Buckeyes have flip-flopped as the team to beat now that Michigan has beaten its hated rival two straight years. No. 7 Penn State also expects to be a factor. No. 19 Wisconsin is the choice to win the West over No. 25 Iowa.

NCAAFB – Iowa State’s Brock, other players in gambling sting, leaves the program
Iowa State confirmed running back Jirehl Brock has left the football program. Brock was among five projected football starters since Aug. 1 to be charged in the state’s investigation of illegal sports wagering by Iowa State and Iowa athletes. All have been charged with tampering with records for allegedly attempting to disguise their identities on a mobile sports betting app account. Brock was the team’s leading rusher last season. He’s suspected of making more than 1,300 illegal wagers totaling over $12,000. He is accused of making bets on three Iowa State football games, two in which he played.

NCAAFB – Williams, Harrison Jr. and Corum top AP preseason All-Americans
Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams of USC, Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michigan running back Blake Corum are among the returning first-team All-Americans who were selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America team. Notre Dame offensive tackle and Miami safety Kam Kinchens also followed up their All-America 2022 seasons by being named preseason All-Americans by AP Top 25 voters. Two-time defending national champion and No. 1 Georgia has the most players on the first team with four, including tight end Brock Bowers. Ohio State is next with three.

FIFA – Women’s World Cup teams head home to different futures
Many teams headed home from the Women’s World Cup with uncertain futures. The struggle for funding, support and recognition will continue for countries like Nigeria and Jamaica. For others the tournament was a stepping stone. Germany, Brazil, Canada and the United States begin the post-tournament soul-searching about what went wrong. The next major tournament for women’s soccer is next year’s Olympics in France. FIFA chief women’s football officer Sarai Bareman said before the final that “there will be millions and millions of women and girls around the world who will sign up to play football for the first time ever after this World Cup.”
