A new interim city attorney has been hired by Benton Harbor City Commissioners. At a Monday meeting, they approved the appointment of Sara Senica to the post. Some commissioners called for more vetting and a special meeting to review the candidate, but Mayor Marcus Muhammad said former attorney Rick Racht stepped down as city attorney August 4 after giving a month’s notice.

“This is an interim basis, not a permanent hire,” Muhammad said. “But at this time, as of August 4, the city of Benton Harbor has no attorney.”

Muhammad said there will be plenty of time for meetings and RFPs when the permanent attorney is hired. In the meantime, he said hiring an interim attorney is a “no brainer.” Senica’s appointment was then approved. She’ll answer directly to the city commission.
