Coming this fall to Lake Michigan College will be a new Marine Maintenance Technician Program. LMC Associate Dean of Regional Campuses Jeremy Burleson tells us this will be a signature program at the South Haven campus, intended to help local boat repair businesses find qualified employees.

“We’ll go through with students to talk about outboard and inboard engines, they’ll go over propulsion systems, plumbing, electrical wiring, hydraulics, rigging, blueprint reading, marine carpentry,” Burleson. “All of the basics a student will need to come in and work at one of our local marinas and be set and ready to go to jump into the shop.”

Burleson says once students complete the seven-week course, they’ll be ready to start a job and pursue certifications with specific types of engines. Local marinas came to LMC suggesting the program, noting there’s a long wait to get boats repaired in the area due to a lack of technicians. Macomb Community College is working with LMC on the program, and one week of it will be spent in Macomb County at their state-of-the-art facility. The program gets started in September, and you can find out more right here.
