Reds 6, Cubs 5 – Joey Votto helps Cincinnati Reds top Chicago Cubs 6-5 in opener of key NL Central series
Joey Votto, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Will Benson each had two hits, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 in the opener of a key four-game series between NL Central contenders. After Andrew Abbott struggled, six Cincinnati relievers combined for 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball. Buck Farmer got five outs for the win, and All-Star Alexis Díaz worked the ninth for his 32nd save in 33 opportunities. Cincinnati increased its lead in the division to 1 1/2 games over Milwaukee and 5 games over Chicago. Dansby Swanson hit his 13th homer for third-place Chicago and Yan Gomes had three of the team’s eight hits. But the Cubs were unable to overcome another shaky performance by Marcus Stroman (10-8).  Stroman allowed six hits, struck out two and walked two in three innings. The All-Star right-hander dropped to 1-4 with a 9.00 ERA in his last seven starts.

MLB – Chicago Cubs acquire Jeimer Candelario in a trade with the Washington Nationals
The Chicago Cubs have reacquired Jeimer Candelario in a trade with the Washington Nationals. Candelario was one of the top bats on the market ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. He’s batting .258 with 16 homers and 53 RBIs in 99 games this season. The Cubs also acquired right-hander José Cuas in a trade with Kansas City for minor league outfielder Nelson Velázquez. Candelario made his big league debut with the Cubs in 2016. The Cubs got Candelario and cash from Washington for minor leaguers DJ Herz and Kevin Made. Herz was an eighth-round pick in the 2019 amateur draft.

NFL – Colts rookie QB Anthony Richardson misses practice following nose surgery
Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson sat out practice Monday and could sit out again Tuesday after undergoing nose surgery. The former Florida star was the fourth overall pick in April’s draft. Indy was expected to hold its first practice in full pads Monday. But Richardson, who started only one full season with his home state Gators, was not available. It’s unclear whether Richardson could miss even more time than this week’s first two workouts. Richardson’s absence comes at the same time the Colts and 2021 NFL rushing champ Jonathan Taylor have been embroiled in a contract dispute.

NFL – Hamlin puts aside fear and practices in pads for the first time since cardiac arrest
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin says he’s put aside his fear to find joy after practicing in pads for the first time since going into cardiac arrest during a game last season. Hamlin said he leaned on his faith in God and himself and the support of family and teammates to overcome any feelings of trepidation he had. The padded practice at training camp marked the next step in the 25-year-old Hamlin’s pursuit to resume playing football. Hamlin collapsed and needed to be resuscitated on the field in January. He was cleared to play in April.

NCAAFB – Northwestern hiring veteran coach Skip Holtz as temporary special assistant
Northwestern is hiring veteran college football coach Skip Holtz in a temporary role as special assistant to interim head coach David Braun, according to a person with knowledge of the move. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Northwestern was still finalizing the hire. Braun was named interim head coach earlier this month to replace Pat Fitzgerald, who was fired after an investigation into hazing allegations in his program. Holtz been coaching the last two years in the USFL, where he has led Birmingham to consecutive championships.

USA 0, POR 0 – Draw – US slips into round of 16 of Women’s World Cup after scoreless draw with Portugal
Megan Rapinoe’s energy as a second-half substitute could not spark the United States, which slipped through to the round of 16 in the Women’s World Cup with an uninspiring 0-0 draw against Portugal on Tuesday. The tie helped the United States avoid the biggest upset in tournament history and was just enough to ensure the Americans advanced to the knockout round. The U.S. looked shaky at best in a game the Americans were expected to win. The United States is the most successful team ever at the World Cup with four titles and has never been eliminated in the group stage at the World Cup.

ESPN – Mark Jackson laid off by ESPN, Doris Burke and Doc Rivers slated as replacements,
Add Mark Jackson to the list of ESPN reporters and commentators who have been laid off over the past five weeks. Jackson was let go on Monday with two years remaining on his contract. Two people close to the move told The Associated Press that with Jeff Van Gundy also being laid off in late June, ESPN is expected to replace them with Doris Burke and Doc Rivers. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they aren’t at liberty to publicly discuss personnel moves.

Tennis – Tennis warns fans, Ukraine’s Svitolina and Belarus’ Azarenka won’t shake hands
Spectators at a tennis tournament in Washington have been told that there would not be a handshake at the conclusion of the match between players from Ukraine and Belarus. During the war in Ukraine, Elina Svitolina — like several other players from her country — has declined to participate in the usual meeting at the net with opponents from Russia or Belarus. Russia invaded Ukraine with the help of Belarus in February 2022 and fighting continues. Svitolina defeated Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 7-6 (2), 6-4 on Monday night. When they met at Wimbledon recently, Azarenka was booed by the crowd for not going to the net to shake hands — even though she did that because she knew Svitolina would not want to shake hands.

Cycling – American Chloe Dygert overcomes injuries, dark days to make world title run
Chloe Dygert’s cycling career could have ended with a terrible crash at the 2020 world championships. The comeback of the two-time Olympian to the top of the sport has been daunting, waylaid by the Epstein-Barr virus, more surgeries to repair the injuries to her leg and another crash this past January. So it’s not surprising there were moments when perhaps the most talented American cyclist of her generation thought about giving up, on the bike and in life. She told The Associated Press that “at times my life did not matter to me." But the 2019 world champion also thinks those dark days have made her stronger. Now, she is back among the favorites to win gold at worlds, which begin Thursday in Glasgow, Scotland.

Horse Racing – Churchill Downs to improve track maintenance, veterinary resources
Churchill Downs will implement safety measures for its September meet including new track surface maintenance equipment and additional monitoring and equine care following 12 horse deaths before and after the Kentucky Derby that spurred suspension of its spring meet. Racing is scheduled to resume Sept. 14 and run through Oct. 1 at the historic track, which paused racing operations on June 7 and moved the meet to Ellis Park. The track will work with HISA and industry experts to predict at-risk horses through advanced analytic techniques and form a safety management committee including horsemen, track employees and veterinarians.
