Congressman Bill Huizenga has sent a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy questioning the United States Postal Service’s plans for consolidating Southwest Michigan postal operations to single a Sort and Delivery Center. Huizenga tells us the initiative is intended for post offices in the Kalamazoo area. He questions how such strategies would affect postal customers.

“That would mean certainly rural route carriers would have to go further and that sort of thing, and it could actually be fairly damaging with delivery,” Huizenga said. “And we do know right now the Post Office is having challenges getting things delivered in a timely manner.”

Huizenga says regional consolidation would force mail carriers to pick up mail at one specific center instead of at the local post office, causing delivery delays. He’s asked DeJoy for more details on the Kalamazoo consolidation plan and requested a meeting.
