Spencer Torkelson and Andy Ibañez homered, and the Detroit Tigers beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 to avoid a weekend sweep. Alex Faedo, who entered with a 6.98 ERA, pitched six shutout innings for Detroit. The right-hander allowed one hit and walked four. Beau Brieske and Jason Foley each worked an inning before Alex Lange pitched a rainy ninth for his 17th save. With runners on second and third, Lange retired Gary Sánchez on a fly ball to center for the final out. Twins 5, White Sox 4 – F/12 – Twins sweep White Sox with a 5-4 win in the 12th on Jeffers’ 2-out single
Ryan Jeffers hit a two-out RBI single in the 12th inning to lift the Minnesota Twins to a 5-4 victory and a series sweep over the Chicago White Sox. The Twins took a three-game lead on Cleveland in the AL Central for their largest margin in more than five weeks. Emilio Pagán earned the win after a perfect 12th. Alex Kirilloff hit the tying RBI double in a three-run ninth against Kendall Graveman. The Twins went scoreless over five innings against starter Lucas Giolito and through the eighth against two more relievers.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 2 – Hot-hitting Bellinger homers again as Cubs beat Cardinals 7-2 to take series
Cody Bellinger homered and drove in three runs, Jameson Taillon pitched into the sixth inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2. Dansby Swanson had two hits and Yan Gomes drove in two runs as Chicago closed out a 6-4 homestand. The Cubs won the last three games of their four-game set against the Cardinals. Bellinger hit a two-run homer in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third. The 2019 NL MVP is batting .381 with 24 RBIs in 31 games since returning from a bruised knee on June 15. Golf – Brian Harman is unstoppable in a drama-free British Open win at Hoylake
Brian Harman is a major champion and it was never in doubt. The 36-year-old American captured the British Open at Royal Liverpool. He started the day with a five-shot lead and no one ever got closer than three on a rainy Sunday in England. Harman led the final 51 holes of this British Open. The one time it got tight on the front nine he made consecutive birdies. The rest of the day was a soggy walk on the links. Harman won for only the third time in his career. He had gone 167 tournaments since his last PGA Tour title.

Golf – LPGA – Cheyenne Knight, Elizabeth Szokol hold on to win LPGA’s lone team event
Cheyenne Knight and Elizabeth Szokol held off Matilda Castren and Kelly Tan by a stroke Saturday to win the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational, the LPGA Tour’s lone team event. Knight and Szokol closed with a 5-under 65 in better-ball play at Midland Country Club, waiting out a delay of 1 hour, 40 minutes because of lightning while they were on the 13th hole. They finished at 23 under, following a better-ball 61 in the second round Thursday with an alternate-shot 62 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead. Castren and Tan shot a 63. They also finished second last year. The 26-year-old Knight also won the 2019 Ascendant LPGA, while Szokol took her first LPGA Tour title.

NHL – Blackhawks announce 2-year contract for F Philipp Kurashev after arbitration
The Chicago Blackhawks and forward Philipp Kurashev have a two-year contract in place after going through salary arbitration.  The team announced the decision on Sunday. The deal carries a salary-cap hit of $2.25 million. The 23-year-old Kurashev set career highs with nine goals and 16 assists in 70 games last season. He has 23 goals and 39 assists in 191 games — all with Chicago. Kurashev was selected by the Blackhawks in the fourth round of the 2018 entry draft. He made his NHL debut in January 2021.

Liberty 101, Fever 83 – Liberty use record 44-point first quarter to rout Fever 101-83
Betnijah Laney scored a season-high 22 points, Jonquel Jones added 18 points and the New York Liberty rode a record hot start to rout the Indiana Fever 101-83. New York made its first nine shots on the way to a 44-point first quarter. That’s the most points ever scored in a period in WNBA history surpassing the 42 that Chicago had against the Liberty in 2019. The Liberty made 15 of 18 from the field in the first, including six 3-pointers to go up by 27 points after the opening 10 minutes. Indiana never could recover. Victoria Vivians led Indiana with 16 points.

IndyCar – Josef Newgarden completes an IndyCar Series weekend sweep at Iowa Speedway
Josef Newgarden completed the weekend sweep he wanted at a track where he’s had plenty of success, winning Sunday’s IndyCar Series race at Iowa Speedway. Newgarden held onto the lead on a restart with three laps to go, winning by less than a second over Team Penske teammate Will Power. It was the sixth victory of Newgarden’s career at the 0.875-mile oval and came a day after he led for 129 laps in another victory. Newgarden needed a little extra work in this race after starting seventh, but he was able to move into the lead by Lap 31 and maintained control.

NASCAR – Hamlin gets his record 7th victory at Pocono and 50th of his career
Denny Hamlin returned to victory lane Sunday at Pocono Raceway a year after his first-place finish was thrown out. Sunday’s win is his record seventh at the track and the 50th in his Cup Series career. Hamlin also gave Toyota its 600th NASCAR victory. Hamlin passed Hall of Fame driver Jeff Gordon for most wins at the tri-oval track. Hamlin and his former Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch had their 1-2 finishes stripped a year ago by NASCAR for aerodynamics violations. This year, he finished ahead of runner-up Tyler Reddick. Martin Truex Jr., who won last week at New Hampshire, was third. Kevin Harvick and Ty Gibbs rounded out the top five.

NFL – Suddenly respectable Detroit Lions try not to buy into hype as training camp opens
The Detroit Lions feel uncomfortable getting so much respect. The Lions opened training camp on Sunday and for the first time in many years, they’re expected to contend in the NFC North and perhaps win a playoff game for the second time since 1957. It’s nice but somewhat unsettling for a team that’s not accustomed to receiving positive preseason attention.  Those expectations were created by Detroit’s 7-2 finish last season, including a 20-16 season-ending victory in Green Bay that knocked the Packers out of the playoff picture. Detroit finished 9-8 and lost a tiebreaker to Seattle for a playoff berth. Quarterback Jared Goff is coming off a strong season in which he threw for 4,438 yards and 29 touchdowns while getting picked off just seven times. Top receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is also back but the backfield was revamped. D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams are gone. Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs, the No. 12 pick in the draft, and Chicago free agent David Montgomery have replaced them.  Tight end Sam LaPorta was selected in the second round from Iowa and veteran Marvin Jones was signed as a free agent to bolster the receiving group.

Tennis – Djokovic withdraws from Toronto tournament, opts to rest after Wimbledon loss
Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the National Bank Open, opting for additional rest after his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. Tennis Canada announced Sunday that Djokovic pulled out of the only Canadian stop on the ATP Tour schedule due to fatigue. The 36-year-old, 23-time Grand Slam champion was set to begin his hard-court preparations for the U.S. Open after falling to the top-ranked Alcaraz last Sunday in a five-set final at Wimbledon. American Christopher Eubanks, who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals, will gain automatic entry into the main draw as Djokovic’s replacement.
