Police investigate drowning in St. Joseph River

Police are investigating after a Berrien Springs man drowned in the St. Joseph Rover Saturday. The Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police Department was called to the river in Oronoko Township near Andrews University property around 8:40 a.m. on a report of an overturned canoe. A search by the the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division recovered several items believed to have been in the canoe when it overturned, but no victim was found. However, some kayakers found the body of a man near an island downriver from the scene of the canoe around 3:30 p.m. Recovery was made by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, and the recovered person has been identified as 47-year-old Timothy Carl Johns of Berrien Springs. The body has been taken to Western Michigan University for an autopsy.
