Summer travelers and construction season means there’s plenty of people stopped on the shoulders of freeways. That’s prompted a message from Michigan State Police. You need to move over. First Lieutenant Mike Shaw says it’s not just courteous, it’s the law.

“We’re hoping that people will do this year-round,” Shaw said. “We’re losing over 1,000 people a year on Michigan roadways to preventable crashes. This is just part of that issue.”

Shaw says not moving over can put people in serious danger. Shaw says people must move over a lane and slow their speeds by ten miles an hour if they encounter someone on the shoulder.
