Are you noticing a lot of bugs this summer? Some people complain about mosquitoes and ants, but Michigan State University entomologist Howard Russell doesn’t think it’s been that bad.

“I think it’s just a normal summer,” Russell said. “All three of those insects are pretty common. The earwigs, this is their time. Normally, toward the end of June, they start coming out. They will continue and people will continue to see them throughout the summer. Mosquitoes are a little trickier because we’ve had a fairly dry spring, and at least where I live, we’ve had very few mosquitoes, and I live in a pretty swampy area.”

Russell says he has noticed a lot of deer flies, which bite, in the Lansing area. He says to avoid having a lot of mosquitoes, do not leave standing water outside because that’s where they can breed.
