1956 The Highway Act is signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, authorized $25 billion dollars for the construction of 41,000 miles of the Interstate Highway System over a 10-year period. Tt was the largest public works project in American history through that time.
- The TV remote control was introduced.
1972 The U.S. Supreme Court banned the death penalty, declaring it cruel and unusual punishment and therefore in violation of the 8th Amendment. It was overruled in 1976.
2007 The first iPhone was sold.
