The South Haven City Council is looking at possibly changing the ordinance on the height of a home to measure it in only feet and eliminate stories. At last night’s meeting, Assistant City Manager Griffin Graham presented the idea after the Planning Commission spent a lot of time on it at the City Council’s request.

“The Planning Commission reviewed this for approximately 10 months,” said Graham. “They considered a variety of different options.”

Graham was asked what other cities do.

“There are other communities who regulate both height by numerical feet and by stories. I am seeing many more move toward just the height by numerical feet, and not as many in the stories.”

The City Council will hold a public hearing on the amendment later. They would not change the maximum height of a home, set at 35 feet. The two-story limit would be removed. The vote by the council was 4-3 to move forward.
