 1678 The first Lady Godiva Procession to celebrate the legend Godiva’s famous nude ride through Coventry marketplace. Her husband, had promised to relieve Coventry of its heavy taxes if she would ride through the town clothed only in her hair. She issued a proclamation that all persons should stay indoors and shut their windows as she rode. The term “Peeping Tom” originates from this legend in which a man named Thomas watched her ride and was struck blind.

1909 The National Negro Committee holds its first meeting. It would become the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

1918 Douglas Campbell became the first American flying “ACE” in an American unit. He downed five enemy aircraft to achieve that status.

1919 Conrad Hilton bought his first hotel. He was going to buy a bank, but the deal fell through, so he bought the Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas instead.

 

 Music History

 1966 Filming began on The Monkees first TV series. Their first single, ‘Last Train to Clarksville’ was released in August 1966, just weeks prior to the TV broadcast debut. In conjunction with the first broadcast of the television show on September 12, 1966, on the NBC television network, NBC and Columbia had a major hit on their hands.
