The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department has released more information about a fight that shut down Silver Beach on Memorial Day. Undersheriff Chuck Heit tells us there was a large group of people gathered at the beach around 7:15 p.m. due to a boxing match that was taking place. He says the participants may have been wearing boxing gloves. Heit says things got out of hand, people got charged up, and it all led to a disturbance. Police made the decision to shut the entire park down, and everyone was out by about 8:30. Heit says there were no injuries, and there was one arrest. He calls the situation “not something we wanted to see,” adding the sheriff’s department at St. Joseph Department of Public Safety will make staffing adjustments at the beach as needed throughout the summer.
