The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has honored a fallen road worker by naming a stretch of Red Bud Trail near Berrien Springs for him. At a meeting this week, commissioners approved the resolution naming Red Bud Trail from Snow Road to Grange Road the “Mack Isom Memorial Road.” William “Mack” Isom was a 24 year veteran of the Berrien County Road Department who was struck by a vehicle and killed while trying to clear a tree from Red Bud Trail on July 20 of 2022. Commissioner Jim Curran read from the resolution.

“He was known for his ability to operate any piece of equipment, and would willingly take on any job asked of him,” Curran read.

The commission then renamed the road for Isom. His family was present for the moment, and Commissioner Teri Freehling addressed them.

“Thank you for sharing Mack with all of us,” Freehling said. “We really appreciate it.”

Freehling called Isom “a good old Baroda boy,” adding language in the resolution saluting him for his service and contributions to the community was “absolutely true.” A framed copy of the resolution was presented to Isom’s family at the meeting by Freehling and Curran. Signs marking the newly renamed road will be erected within a month of the commission’s vote.
