Mets at Tigers, PPD – Mets-Tigers series-opening game postponed due to rain
The New York Mets and Detroit Tigers were rained out on Tuesday night. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday. New York Mets star pitchers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer are returning to the mound in the series against one of their former teams. The 40-year-old Verlander is scheduled to make his Mets debut on Thursday. Verlander’s season-opening start was delayed due to a back injury. The 38-year-old Scherzer is due to pitch Wednesday night in the second game of the doubleheader. It will be Scherzer’s first time on the mound since April 19, when he was ejected for violating MLB’s foreign substance policy.

Nationals 4, Cubs 1 – Call, Abrams have big hits in 7th as Nats beat Cubs 4-1
Alex Call hit a two-run double during a three-run seventh inning, and the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1. CJ Abrams had the tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh off Keegan Thompson as part of a 3-for-3 night. Victor Robles followed with an infield hit and Call doubled to the gap in left-center to make it 4-1. Chicago’s Patrick Wisdom tied for the major league lead with his 11th homer, a 426-foot shot off Mason Thompson in the seventh that tied the game at 1-1. Hunter Harvey got the win in relief for Washington and Kyle Finnegan got his sixth save.

White Sox 4, Twins 3 – F/10 – Benintendi stars as White Sox top Twins 3-2 in 10 innings
Andrew Benintendi robbed Carlos Correa of a homer and hit a game-ending single in the 10th inning, sending the Chicago White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Hanser Alberto opened the 10th on second as the automatic runner and advanced on Elvis Andrus’ sacrifice. After Tim Anderson bounced to shortstop, Benintendi lined a clean single into left against Caleb Thielbar. Eloy Jiménez homered and Michael Kopech pitched six effective innings as the White Sox earned their second straight win after a 10-game losing streak. Kopech got some help from Benintendi, who made a leaping grab in left on Correa’s drive in the first.

Sam Bennett had a goal and an assist and Carter Verhaeghe and Nick Cousins also scored for Florida. Aleksander Barkov had two assists. Matthew Knies had his first NHL goal and Michael Bunting also scored for Toronto. Ilya Samsonov stopped 24 shots. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Thursday in Toronto.

Kraken 5, Stars 4 – OT – Epic return by Pavelski goes to waste as Stars lose Game 1
Joe Pavelski became the oldest player ever with a four-goal game in the NHL playoffs, and did it in his return two weeks after going into concussion protocol. That still wasn’t enough for the Dallas Stars. The 38-year-old Pavelski scored all four of their goals, including two in the third period to force overtime. But the Stars lost 5-4 to Seattle in Game 1 of their second-round series on Tuesday night. Stars coach Pete DeBoer says he’s ashamed that the team wasted such an epic performance. He says Pavelski tried to drag them to a win.

Jalen Brunson scored 30 points and keyed the run the New York Knicks needed just in time to get by a Miami Heat team playing without Jimmy Butler, evening the Eastern Conference semifinals at a game apiece with a 111-105 victory. Julius Randle returned from a sprained left ankle that sidelined him in Game 1 with 25 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, and RJ Barrett scored 24 points for the No. 5-seeded Knicks. Josh Hart finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Caleb Martin scored 22 points in place of Butler for the Heat, who host Game 3 on Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Poole missed a 3-pointer to tie it with 9.7 seconds left as the Warriors’ rally in the closing minutes fell short. NCAAFB – Michigan State CB Charles Brantley withdraws from portal
Michigan State cornerback Charles Brantley has withdrawn from the transfer portal, team spokesman Ben Phlegar said Tuesday. Brantley’s return allows coach Mel Tucker to retain a key player after losing a pair of standouts on Sunday, when quarterback Payton Thorne and receiver Keon Coleman entered the portal. Brantley started 11 games at cornerback last season, leading the team with six pass breakups and making two interceptions.

NCAAFB – 12-team CFP schedule includes New Year’s Day tripleheaders
The College Football Playoff released a schedule for the 12-team format that will be used in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, which will feature New Year’s Day quarterfinal tripleheaders but no games played on Saturday. The first-round games will be played the third week of December, with one game on Friday night and three on Saturday. The quarterfinals in the new expanded format will be held on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. NCAA – NCAA’s four-year academic progress rate score steady
The NCAA’s newest academic progress rate score is steady at 984. That’s despite slight decreases in men’s basketball, football and women’s basketball. Each athlete on each team receives one point each semester they are academically eligible and each semester they remain in school or graduate. The cutline is 930. The NCAA attributes the declines in men’s and women’s basketball and football scores to more players being ineligible to compete during the 2021-22 season instead of those leaving school.  The latest report also shows that more than 20,700 former athletes who left school without degrees have completed their classwork during the 19 years APR scores have been calculated. Nearly half of that total are from men’s and women’s basketball and football.“Excellence is engrained in student-athletes — academically and athletically,” said Central Michigan president Robert Davies, chairman of the Division I committee on academics. “Thousands of former student-athletes are returning to college to complete their degrees, further demonstrating the importance of higher education and exemplifying the fulfillment of earning a college degree.”

NFL – Ex-Raider Ruggs taking plea deal, prison in fatal DUI crash
Former Las Vegas Raiders player Henry Ruggs will admit that he drove drunk at up to 156 mph before causing a fiery crash that killed a woman. That will mean the 24-year-old first-round NFL draft pick will avoid trial and be sentenced to three to 10 years in state prison. Ruggs spoke in court Tuesday only to acknowledge that he understands the terms of his plea deal. His plea is scheduled May 10, with sentencing to come on another date. A prosecutor endorsed the agreement. Ruggs was dropped by the Raiders shortly after the crash in November 2021.
