AAA of Michigan is applauding the state House for approving legislation this week designed to reduce distracted driving. The House bills amend state law to not only ban texting while driving, but also to ban using social media, video streaming, or sending or receiving calls. AAA’s Adrienne Woodland tells us it’s necessary to update the old law.

“Today with advancements of in-vehicle technology and the use of cell phones in our daily lives, drivers have more potential to be distracted than ever before, and distracted driving legislation needs to be in line with current trends,” Woodland said. “These bills are a step in the right direction.”

Woodland says 400,000 people are injured in distraction-related crashes every year. In 2021, distracted driving crashes killed 3,522 people in the U.S. and 59 in Michigan. She notes even looking away from the road for a second leaves a driver distracted for 27 seconds. AAA is urging the Senate to also pass the bills.
