A new program at Southwestern Michigan College aims to help new students be better prepared for the college experience. SMC Dean of Student Development Katie Hannah tells us Roadrunner Ready is a five week course during the summer that seeks to help those students who have fallen behind in the past couple of years.

“It’s designed primarily to help students who were in high school during COVID and who might have some learning loss in the areas of math and English,” Hannah said. “This program is designed to jump start that college experience with getting extra help in math and English, as well as an in depth introduction to all of the student resources that we have here at SMC.”

The program is Mondays through Thursdays and will include free breakfast and gas cards for getting to the sessions. It’s all grant-funded and free. Hannah says many students have struggled to get caught up in math and English since in-person school was canceled during COVID. There’s also the general confusion of starting college that comes for all students. Those who are interested in Roadrunner Ready can sign up online. Students who complete the program will receive scholarships of up to $1,000.
