Dodgers 6, Cubs 2 – James Outman hits grand slam as Dodgers beat Cubs 6-2
James Outman hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the ninth inning for his second homer of the game, and the Los Angeles Dodgers cooled off the Chicago Cubs with a 6-2 victory. Max Muncy also homered for the banged-up Dodgers, who had dropped three of four. David Peralta and Miguel Vargas each had two hits. It was the first career grand slam and multihomer game for the 25-year-old Outman. The rookie outfielder also threw out a runner at the plate. Chicago had won a season-high four straight. Cody Bellinger homered against his former team for the second time this season, but Michael Fulmer struggled with his location in the ninth.

MLB – White Sox’s Hendriks says he’s in remission from lymphoma
Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks says he is in remission from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Hendriks announced Thursday on Instagram that he is cancer-free. Hendriks announced his diagnosis in January and completed his final round of chemotherapy two weeks ago. A three-time All-Star, Hendriks was third in the majors with 37 saves and made his third All-Star team last season. He led the American League with a career-high 38 saves in 2021, after leaving Oakland to sign a $54 million, three-year contract with the White Sox.

MLB – Cubs place RHP Jameson Taillon on IL with groin injury
The Chicago Cubs have placed right-hander Jameson Taillon on the 15-day injured list because of a left groin strain. Right-hander Javier Assad has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Assad is slated to start the opener of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cubs manager David Ross says Taillon got hurt while playing catch on Wednesday on flat ground in Oakland.

NBA – Celtics’ Malcolm Brogdon wins NBA’s 6th man of year award
The Boston Celtics asked Malcolm Brogdon to learn a new role. He mastered it quickly. Brogdon was honored Thursday night as the NBA’s sixth man of the year, after a season in which he came off the bench exclusively and helped the Celtics finish with the second-best record in the NBA. It’s the second major individual award of Brogdon’s career: He was rookie of the year in 2016-17. Brogdon beat out fellow finalists Immanuel Quickley of New York and Bobby Portis of Milwaukee.

NFL – NFL draft gives improving Lions a chance to add to momentum
The Detroit Lions are going into the NFL draft set up to build upon the relative success they had last season, finishing with a surge that gave them a winning record for the first time since 2017. Quarterback Jared Goff says there is an overwhelming feeling of optimism and excitement for what the team thinks it can do. Detroit is heading into draft week with the No. 6 and No. 18 picks overall, a pair of second-round slots and five more selections to give general manager Brad Holmes plenty of options in his third draft with the franchise.

NFL – Bears have options at No. 9 going into NFL draft
The Chicago Bears already used the draft to address their glaring need for a playmaking receiver. They still have big holes to fill. The Bears need better protection for quarterback Justin Fields and help on the defensive line, starting with the No. 9 overall pick. General manager Ryan Poles already made one huge splash when he traded the No. 1 overall selection to Carolina for receiver DJ Moore and moved down eight spots. There are a number of ways Poles could go at No. 9. Things could get interesting if Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter is available, given his off-field issues. If they opt for an offensive lineman, Ohio State’s Paris Johnson Jr., Northwestern’s Peter Skoronski, Georgia’s Broderick Jones and Tennessee’s Darnell Wright are possibilities.

NFL – Colts hoping to find new franchise quarterback in NFL draft
Shane Steichen understands his first draft as an NFL head coach could define his entire tenure. Finding the best young quarterback to build around could quickly turn things around for the Indianapolis Colts. Miss and the Colts could be searching for answers for years. With Indy holding the fourth overall pick and conventional wisdom suggesting Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud will both be off the board after the first two selections April 27, the Colts may need to trade up one spot to No. 3 to get the next-best guy left on their draft board.

Golf – PGA – Chien leads Chevron after 1st round, Korda tied for 2nd
Peiyun Chien shot a 5-under 67 on a rainy Thursday in the transplanted Chevron Championship to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s first major of the year. Unable to find a sponsor willing to add to the half-century run at Mission Hills, the tournament bolted the California desert for the woods of suburban Houston. The 32-year-old Chien, who is from Taiwan, had six birdies — including four in a five-hole span on Nos. 4-8 — at The Club at Carlton Woods. Second-ranked Nelly Korda was among six players and three Americans tied for second at 68. Korda is fully healthy after missing four months and a lot of momentum last year with a blood clot in her arm that required surgery.

House approves trans athlete ban for girls and women’s teams
Transgender athletes whose biological sex assigned at birth was male would be barred from competing on girls or women’s sports teams at federally supported schools and colleges under legislation pushed through by House Republicans on Thursday. It’s the latest sign of the newly empowered GOP checking off a high-profile item on their social agenda. The legislation is unlikely to advance further because the Democratic-led Senate will not support it and the White House said President Joe Biden would veto it. Supporters say their effort is designed to protect fair competition in sports. Democrats criticized the push as targeting a vulnerable group of young people for political gain.

IndyCar – IndyCar’s Dixon still upset with O’Ward about race day crash
IndyCar drivers Scott Dixon and Pato O’Ward are not yet on speaking terms. Four days after they tangled in Long Beach, they arrived for an Indianapolis 500 test session without talking to each other. The dispute began after O’Ward dove inside Dixon heading into the eighth turn at Long Beach. When their tires touched, Dixon went nose first into the tire barrier and wound up dropping out of the race 17 laps later. Dixon contends it’s a move O’Ward shouldn’t have made. O’Ward calls it racing.
