1909 American explorer Robert Peary claimed to have reached the North Pole. However, his claims were disputed by some historians and Frederick Cook who claimed to have reached it the year before. His claims were also disputed.
1930 The Twinkie snack cake was invented by James Dewar. While working for the Continental Baking Company (which later became Hostess), he needed a substitute for the filling in their strawberry shortcake, as strawberries were seasonal. So he substituted cream and viola, the Twinkie was born. He claimed to have eaten three a day and lived to the age of 92.
1947 The first Tony Awards were presented. The award is named after Antoinette Perry, a co-founder of the American Theatre Wing which created the award. BTS: Best Actress went to Ingrid Bergman in Joan of Lorraine. Jose Ferrer was best Actor for Cyrano de Bergerac.
Music History:
1968 Simon and Garfunkel were at #1 on the US album chart with the soundtrack of Mike Nichols’ movie The Graduate. The film boosted the profile of the folk-rock duo and on the strength of the hit single ‘Mrs. Robinson’, the soundtrack album rose to the top of the charts.
