The Lake Michigan College Honors Program will host a Civil Discourse Forum on Gun Violence Thursday. LMC social sciences chair Amy Scrima tells us the college each fall surveys the student body to find out what issue they would like to discuss as part of the Civil Discourse held annually.

“This year, the number one thing on student minds is gun violence,” Scrima said. “We’ve done past panels on issues like healthcare, social justice. Last year was student debt. So, it really runs the gamut on the things that students are concerned about, but this year for probably pretty obvious reasons, I think, gun violence was right at the top of the list.”

And this survey was done in the fall, before the MSU shootings. Scrima says the forum will feature five guest speakers, including an associate professor at Columbia University who studies gun violence, state Representative Joey Andrews, a hospital administrator, and two emergency room nurses. Each will have four minutes to answer four questions. Then the students will get to ask questions. The event, set to take place in the Fettig Lecture Hall at LMC from 6 to 8 p.m., is open to the public. It will also be on Zoom.
