The Berrien County Parks Department is looking to replace a popular pavilion at Madeline Bertrand County Park. Speaking to county commissioners Thursday, Parks Director Jill Adams said the pavilion is around 30 years old and starting to show it.

“The river shelter is one of three rental pavilions at this park,” Adams said. “Since COVID, it’s become more popular as people are looking for more outdoor venues for their gatherings. So, we’ve seen an increase in rentals at this pavilion.”

Adams said they’re seeking a grant to put in a new pavilion at a cost of around $200,000. She’s hoping to keep the fireplace currently at the pavilion and add some landscaping.

“It’s very peaceful there. It’s a nice place just to get away off the beaten path. Very attractive views, and we would like the shelter to reflect that.”

Adams said the county would seek a $150,000 Recreation Passport grant from the state. The county would pay the other $50,000. The board of commissioners approved the grant application Thursday.
