Two children aged 3 and 4 are dead after an early Thursday morning fire at 385 Britain Avenue in Benton Harbor.

The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety says firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at a home near Britain and Columbus around 3:40 a.m. with a report of people trapped inside.

They arrived to find three adults and four children had already escaped. Firefighters went to work on the flames and found two deceased children inside the home. Several of the individuals who escaped the fire were treated for injuries at Corewell Health South in St. Joseph.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and autopsies on the two children are planned at Western Michigan University. Their names have not yet been released. The home was destroyed.
