With more than 7,000 U.S. troops killed, the Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the costliest battles of World War II.
1954 Inoculation of children with Jonas Salk’s ‘s polio vaccine began in Pittsburgh. Nationwide testing began two months later. It was the first successful vaccine for the dreaded disease. Before it, there were about 15,000 cases of paralysis and 1,900 deaths annually from polio in the U.S.
Music History:
1974 Sister Janet Mead’s recording of The Lord’s Prayer made it onto the Billboard Top 100. It charted for 13 weeks, reaching #4 and going gold. Since the lyrics came from the teachings of Jesus in the Bible, it is the only song to hit the Top 10 in which the lyrics are attributed to Jesus Christ. Mead donated her earnings to charity.
