Several Michigan State University students returning to class after last week’s mass shooting were greeted by a furry new friend this week.

Dowagiac Police Department K9 officer Tole and Deputy Chief Kevin Roman visited MSU’s campus Tuesday to help students ease back from the trauma they endured since a gunman opened fire on campus.

Tole – who retired as a full-time officer last year to become Dowagiac PD’s Goodwill Ambassador – participated with class projects, comforted students, and posed for selfies with the students, according to the department.

“K9 Tole and the officers of the Dowagiac Police Department want to express their condolences to the victims, victims families, and those affected by this tragedy,” reads a Facebook post from the department.

Tole is a German Shepard who spent six years with the department. He was replaced by a Belgian Malinois named Cash.
