1937 Nylon was patented, by Dr. Wallace Carothers of the du Pont Co. Its first commercial use was in 1938 for toothbrush bristles. Nylon stockings went on sale in 1939.
1978 The first Bulletin Board Service was created, CBBS in Chicago, Illinois). It opened to the public the following year. It connected 253,301 callers before its shutdown. BBS systems were the forerunners to the Internet.
Music History:
1975 Cher started her own weekly hour of a music and comedy show on CBS-TV. The singer had co-presented The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour with Sonny Bono before their divorce. BTW: Sonny Bono was born on this day in 1935. He died in a skiing accident in 1998.
