Following the mass shooting at Michigan State University Monday night, state Representative Joey Andrews says state lawmakers are the ones who can do something to prevent further such tragedies, and he believes they have to. Andrews told us he thinks a lack of political will has prevented Michigan policy makers from taking steps to prevent gun violence.

“There’s some real low-hanging fruit that I think we can take care of right away,” Andrews said. “Thing like stronger background checks, red flag laws, registering firearms. It’s coming out this particular person had a background with illegal firearms, that he had not long ago been charged with transporting a loaded weapon, and you’d think that somebody who had just been charged with that recently would be on multiple lists and that if we had good background checks and red flag laws, it would have been difficult for him to acquire a weapon in the first place.”

Andrews said he believes most people want laws to prevent incidents like the MSU and Oxford High School shootings. The Legislature canceled its session Tuesday and Andrews told us lawmakers were up until the early hours talking about ideas and making sure staff were safe.
