Police said a local man had to be extricated from his vehicle and sent to the hospital after drunkenly speeding through a St. Joseph Township neighborhood late Sunday night.
At about 11:45 p.m. township police responded to a crash near the intersection of May Street and Woodward Avenue. They said the driver, a 41-year-old male whose name has not been released, was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed and left the roadway, went up an embankment, became airborne, struck a tree and got trapped in the vehicle.
The man was transported to Corewell Health on St. Joseph for his injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a factor, and the incident is still under investigation.
Assisting agencies included the St. Joseph Township Fire Department, Berrien County Sheriff’s Department reconstruction team, Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety, and Medic 1 Ambulance.
