Congressman Tim Walberg is vowing to continue efforts to protect the Great Lakes now that he’s the representative of the state’s Fifth District. He toured Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer on Tuesday, hearing from the DNR about invasive species that threaten the state’s ecosystem, erosion, and recent developments at the park. Walberg told us he used to visit Warren Dunes when he was young and has supported Great Lakes issues.

“I also believe that what’s in my district is to be shepherded, stewarded as best as possible,” Walberg said. “When you think of natural resources, 20% of the world’s fresh water resources, we have to take care of it. We’ve done it on the east side of the state. We’ve been involved with all of the caucus dealing with the Great Lakes, and we’ll continue to do that.”

Walberg said key to the state has been the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which provides around $300 million a year to the lakes. The DNR’s Drew Montgomery told us he was pleased to have a chance to show Walberg how Warren Dunes has changed in recent decades, noting this is the first time he can remember a congressman touring the park. Walberg described Warren Dunes as “a jewel.”
