High school students and leaders from across Berrien County will join together this month to celebrate the legacy Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Organizers said in a release this “special inspirational Zoom session” will highlight the message of MLK, “one that rings as loudly and clearly as ever, more than 50 years after his death.”

The event is in its second year, and this year’s theme is “Breaking the Silence,” which comes from Dr. King’s writings and speeches on multiple topics and is a call for the public to speak up and not remain silent on important matters, according to the release.

Benton Harbor Team Solutions Team Leader Princella Tobias and Team Solutions member Nicholas Gunn are co-hosting the event again this year.

Joining the students will be Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad, St. Joseph Mayor Laura Goos and Michael Nixon, Vice President for University Culture & Inclusion at Andrews University.

“We are pleased to allow area students to highlight notable video clips of the late civil rights leader’s speeches,” Tobias said. “This is the second year that Mr. Benton Harbor 2022, Nicholas Gunn, now a freshman at Andrews University, will engage area students from Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, and other Berrien County, Michigan high schools, who will choose their favorite clips, share why they chose them, and why their chosen speech is relevant to them,”

The event will start at 1 p.m. January 16. The event will also air on WVBH, 105.3 FM radio station, a nonprofit station in Benton Harbor.
