State Senator Aric Nesbitt will be the new minority leader in the Michigan Senate when it gets back to work January 11. He tells us he feels blessed the Republican caucus came together to place him in the position, and he plans to work with the new majority Democrats on shared priorities.

“There are non-partisan areas where we can find agreement as we have in the past,” Nesbitt said. “For example, incoming Senator Majority Leader Brinks and I have worked on education issues and statewide and local infrastructure improvements. I look forward to continuing that kind of partnership.”

Nesbitt says the two sides can agree on education and skilled trades training, infrastructure, and broadband. He says Republicans can work with Democrats on those.

“They have a one seat majority in the House and the Senate, and if they’re going to govern in the middle 70% and reach out and govern in a bipartisan way, then we look forward to working together. But if they’re going to work to pass a far left wing, progressive ideological dream ticket, then we’re going to fight against them and oppose them and they’re going to have to put every one of their members on records on those issues.”

Nesbitt says he wants to get right to work on reducing the cost of living when the Legislature is back. He says it would be best for Republicans and Democrats to work together on issues of shared concern, considering the close margin in the Legislature and the division in the state and nation.
