An agreement has been reached between Berrien County and New Buffalo Township regarding maintenance of the Marquette Greenway trail. The trail is planned to run from Chicago to New Buffalo, and work on the stretch from the Indiana state line to New Buffalo is slated to begin in the late spring. The Berrien County Board of Commissioners last week approved a resolution requiring a final maintenance plan for the trail so it can receive a state grant for the project. The county has been granted conditional approval from the state’s Transportation Alternatives Program, or TAP, for nearly $1 million for the trail. However, the program required a maintenance plan for the trail before the funds can be awarded. Under the arrangement, New Buffalo Township will make the Marquette Greenway part of its parks system and maintain it accordingly. The city of New Buffalo, which will be the location of the trailhead, will do much the same. The county board’s action now clears the way for the TAP grant.
