Opening day for Michigan’s firearm deer hunting season was Tuesday. Chad Stewart is the Michigan Department of Natural Resources deer, elk, and moose management specialist. He says hunters need to be aware of new reporting rules for when they bag a deer.

“Every deer hunter now who is successful is required to submit a deer for a deer report within 72 hours after their deer has been tagged,” Stewart said. “This is a new requirement for every hunter. It’s something that ‘s certainly going to take a lot of time to get used to. We’re taking an education over enforcement approach this year.”

The DNR says hunters should expect excellent conditions this season, which runs until November 30. Last year, nearly 540,000 Michigan hunters harvested almost 400,000 deer.
