 1919 Veterans Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday honoring military veterans.

1921 The remains of an unidentified American serviceman from World War I was interred at Arlington National Cemetery. U.S. President Warren G. Harding officiated over the ceremonies. It is now known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

1982 The Vietnam Memorial was dedicated. Engraved on a black granite wall are the names of more than 58,000 Americans killed or missing in action during the Vietnam War.

  

Music History:

1978 Donna Summer started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with her disco version of Jimmy Webb’s ‘MacArthur Park’, a song that also charted for actor Richard Harris in the late 60’s.
