Halloween is Monday and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is reminding parents and trick or treaters of some safety tips. Undersheriff Chuck Heit tells WSJM News there are five good rules to follow when it comes to trick or treating.

“If children are going out after dark, make sure that they have reflective tape on their costumes or bags, and if not, make sure to give them a glow stick to carry,” Heit said. “Make sure children know to never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle. We always recommend a responsible adult should always accompany young children when they’re out trick or treating in their neighborhoods, and make sure to instruct older children to travel in well-lit and familiar areas and to stick with their friends.”

And Heit says it’s important for the kids not to dig into their candy until their parents have looked it over. As far as adults, he says drivers needs to go extra slow on Monday night and be vigilant for kids darting across the road. Children are twice as likely to be struck by a car on Halloween than any other day. Throughout the weekend, Heit reminds partiers to plan ahead to have a ride home if drinking is on the agenda.
