Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is the latest guest speaker to address the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan Speaker Series. According to The Herald Palladium, he spoke at the Mendel Center Thursday. Of the recent death of Queen Elizabeth II, Turnbull said he was surprised by how stricken he was by the news. Turnbull described Elizabeth as intelligent and said she reigned during extraordinary times. The former PM reflected on his own political career and his country’s political system, saying Australia is vulnerable to the same kind of gerrymandering as the United States. He said it’s never a good thing for a politician to know he or she can’t lose. Turnbull was the first of four speakers coming to the Economic Club in the current series. Up next is Henry Winkler on November 8, followed by biographer Wil Haygood on January 19, and finally, GoldieBlox CEO Debbie Sterling on March 14.
