Employers, labor leaders, and state officials are raising awareness about preventing suicide in the construction industry. This is Construction Suicide Prevention week. Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity Deputy Director Sean Egan says it’s okay not to be okay.

“The statistics are quite alarming for this industry in particular,” Egan said. “That includes construction workers being four times more likely than the average population to commit suicide.”

Egan says it’s a male-dominated industry and men are more likely to commit suicide and less likely to seek help. He says they want people to know there is a 988 suicide prevention hotline across the country.
